Who makes it, and what to know
Who makes it: Ascaso, in Barcelona, Spain. Everything the Steel DUO has, plus a walnut joystick steam lever, a hot-water tap, a competition shower screen, two steam tips (one hole and three), two portafilters (double and bottomless), a stainless tamper and a stainless drip tray. Two thermoblocks, one for coffee and one for steam, so it brews and steams at the same time. PID temperature control by the degree, a 58 mm portafilter with a walnut handle, an adjustable over-pressure valve, an analog pressure gauge and a silent vibration pump; volumetric programming (pre-infusion, single, double, auto standby). The body is powder-coated carbon steel and polished stainless. It uses about half the energy of a boiler machine. Power: 2100 watts on 120 volts, with a NEMA 5-20 plug, the 20-amp kind with one blade turned sideways. It needs a 20-amp circuit; the maker includes an adaptor. Check your outlet before you buy. 10.5 in. wide, 12.5 in. deep, 15 in. tall (16.2 in. to the top of the steam lever); 67 oz reservoir; 3 in. of cup clearance. In the box: five baskets including a blind one, two portafilters, two steam tips and the tamper. Warranty: 12 months from Ascaso, plus 5 years on the thermoblock and group. Ascaso's US service center handles support. Home use only.
