The Bialetti Moka Express: the stovetop coffee pot from 1933, in six colors, and the parts its warranty leaves out

The Moka Express needs no power, no pods and no filters, and Alfonso Bialetti created it in 1933. But the Moka Express has gaskets that wear out, and Bialetti's two-year warranty doesn't cover the gaskets or the handle.

Alfonso Bialetti created the Moka Express in 1933, an eight-sided aluminum pot that brews coffee on the stove. It needs no power, no pods and no paper filters, just water, ground coffee and heat. And Bialetti now makes the Moka Express in color, so the pot you leave on the stove can be red, yellow, green, light blue or pink, or black with gold.

The Moka Express is the only coffee maker we list that needs no power at all. So there's nothing to plug in and nothing to program, so it works anywhere there's a gas or electric stove.

Is the Moka Express for you
A good fit if

You'd like strong coffee from the stove, with nothing to plug in and no pods or filters to buy, and a pot that brings a color into the kitchen.

Look elsewhere if

You want a full mug of coffee from one brew, or you cook on induction and don't want an adapter plate. The six-cup pot makes about 9 ounces of coffee.

Warranty

Two years from Bialetti on manufacturing defects. The gaskets and the handle aren't covered.

What the Moka Express does

To brew in the Moka Express, you fill the bottom with water and the funnel in the middle with ground coffee, then screw the top on and set the pot on the stove. Then the brewed coffee collects in the top of the pot, ready to pour.

Every Moka Express we link is the six-cup size, which makes about 9 ounces of coffee. That means six small espresso cups, not six mugs, and owners say the same thing below. So the six-cup pot suits one or two people, and owners drink the coffee short or top it up with hot water or milk.

The Moka Express is aluminum, so it works on gas and electric stoves. But on an induction cooktop it needs Bialetti's induction plate, which Bialetti sells as an adapter.

Cleaning the Moka Express takes warm water only, because Bialetti says to rinse each piece with warm water, with no soap and no dishwasher.

What the Moka Express doesn't do

The Moka Express makes one brew at a time, about 9 ounces from the six-cup pot, so it won't make a full pot of coffee for a household. It also needs you at the stove while it brews. And getting the coffee and the heat right takes a few tries, as owners say below.

Bialetti's warranty on the Moka Express is two years on manufacturing defects, but it doesn't cover the parts that wear with use. And Bialetti names the gaskets, funnels, plates and handles among those parts. So plan on replacing the gasket from time to time, and Bialetti sells replacement gaskets.

What owners say about the Moka Express

On Amazon, the red Moka Express scores 4.3 out of 5 from 2,317 ratings, and the yellow, green and light blue pots score 4.2 or 4.3 out of 5 (September 2026). Those ratings cover the three-cup and the six-cup pots together. But the pink pot scores 3.8 out of 5 from 55 ratings, and the Black Oro pot scores 4.2 out of 5 from 78 ratings.

"First time trying moka pot. 6 cup is the perfect size. I love the light blue color and it looks great as a counter piece."

Amazon customer, verified purchase, March 2026, in light blue

"This pot is elegant, well-made, and works beautifully. It is extremely easy to hand wash."

Amazon customer, verified purchase, June 2026, in Black Oro

"It does take practice to get a good result if you’ve never used a moca before."

Amazon customer, verified purchase, January 2026, in pink

"Warning, it is NOT 6 cups of regular coffee, it is 6 cups of espresso sized, ie demitasse style cups."

Amazon customer, verified purchase, May 2026, in green

But the complaints about the Moka Express are worth reading too, and several are about how the pot arrived.

"Had to return. Landed in an envelope, no protective packaging at all. Scratches as a result of this."

Amazon customer, verified purchase, September 2026, in yellow

"I've had an earlier version of this for a couple of years, makes good coffee and I like the green color but the handle broke off."

Amazon customer, verified purchase, March 2022, in green

The green pot's handle broke after a couple of years, and the handle is one of the parts Bialetti's warranty doesn't cover.

The Moka Express's colors, and where to buy each color

All six colors of the Moka Express are sold on Amazon, and every color we link is the six-cup size. So the delivery and returns follow the Amazon seller's terms, and the warranty is Bialetti's. And red, yellow, green and light blue are Bialetti's Rainbow colors, and the pink pot is sold on Amazon as a Rainbow pot too. But Black Oro is a limited edition with gold detailing, outside the Rainbow line.

Bialetti also makes a three-cup Moka Express in most of these colors. But a three-cup pot makes about 4.4 ounces, so check the size on the listing before you buy.

Who makes the Moka Express

Bialetti Industrie is based in Coccaglio, near Brescia, in Italy. Bialetti dates from 1919, when Alfonso Bialetti opened his workshop, and he created the Moka Express in 1933. But Bialetti says its products are designed in Italy and made in facilities in Europe and beyond, so the country a given pot is made in isn't stated. And there's no recall on record for the Moka Express at the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (checked September 2026).

What goes with the Moka Express

The Moka Express is the first machine in the coffee machine guide, the coffee maker that needs no power at all. So the guide is the place to set it beside a pod machine, a drip coffee maker and the colorful espresso machines, with the colors each one comes in.
