The color you want decides which fridge you end up with. Here is every retro refrigerator you can actually buy in the US right now, sorted the way people really choose.

Every retro fridge page on the internet starts with the brand. Nobody buys that way. You stand in the kitchen, look at the cabinets, and think "green, or maybe cream." Then you find out which green you can actually get, at what size, for what money, and the decision makes itself.

So this guide is sorted by color, and inside each color the fridges are ranked by how much fridge you get for the look. Before the colors, the three kinds of "retro fridge" you are choosing between, because the word covers very different machines.

The three kinds

The single-door showpiece. One door, a small freezer box inside, the rounded 1950s shape. Smeg's FAB28 is the original. It holds about as much as an apartment fridge, and it is the one in every photograph.
The bottom-freezer retro. Same curves, a real freezer drawer underneath, frost-free. Unique Appliances, iio, Smeg's FAB32. This is the one that can be the only fridge in the house.
The budget retro. Galanz, and Frigidaire's licensed line. Plastic where the others are metal, but the shape and the color read right from across a room, and they cost a fraction.

Cream is the color to buy if you are not sure. It goes with every countertop and it is the one Smeg never discontinues.

Green

The retro color. Smeg's Pastel Green is the reference, and it is the only true pastel green in a full-size shape. When it is in stock on Amazon, it is the one to buy. When it is not, Unique's Summer Mint is close, cheaper, and has a proper freezer.

Red

Red dates fastest and looks best in a white kitchen. Smeg's is a true red; iio's wine red is the grown-up version; Galanz's Hot Rod Red is the loud one.

Cream and white

Cream is warmer than white, it goes with every countertop, and it is the Smeg color that never gets discontinued. If you are not sure, buy cream.

Black

Black retro is a different mood: a diner, not a farmhouse. Smeg's black FAB28 is the one with the most stock right now; Galanz's Vinyl Black is the budget way in.

The ones you cannot buy online

Big Chill builds retro fridges to order in Colorado in seven standard colors and about two hundred custom ones, and sells them direct from its own site and a handful of dealers. The Amazon listings for Big Chill are years old and should not be trusted. If the color you want is not in any list above, that is where it lives, at a price to match.

Which brings the whole thing back to the cabinets. The fridge is the biggest block of color in the room. Choose it first, and the toaster and kettle become easy.
