Refrigerators
Full-size fridges in color for a family kitchen, from Smeg, Café and KitchenAid
Most of the retro fridges we list hold 12 cubic feet or less. So here are the full-size fridges we list in a color or a finish other than stainless, from 18.5 cubic feet to 30.5 cubic feet, with what owners say about each fridge.

A full-size fridge is the biggest block of color in a kitchen, and it's the appliance you see from the doorway. But only three makers we list build a full-size fridge that isn't stainless. Those three makers are Smeg, with a two-door fridge in its retro colors, Café, with fridges in matte white or matte black, and KitchenAid, with three fridges in Juniper, a dark green, or Black Ore. So this guide puts the size of each fridge first, because a family fridge has to fit the space as well as the shopping, and then gives the colors that were in stock when we checked.
Smeg's FAB50, with two doors and 18.5 cubic feet, in white.
KitchenAid's 30 cubic foot French-door fridge in Juniper, a dark green.
KitchenAid's 24 cubic foot counter-depth fridge in Juniper, or Café's two counter-depth fridges in matte black.
Smeg's FAB50, with two full years, then parts for the sealed cooling system through the fifth year.
The full-size fridges we list, by size
Seven full-size fridges come in a color or finish we link, and they range from 18.5 cubic feet to 30.5 cubic feet. So the table gives each fridge's size, and whether each fridge is counter depth.
| Fridge | Size | Width | Height | Depth | Counter depth |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| KitchenAid KRFF436, French door | 30.5 cu. ft. | 35.8 in. | 70.1 in. | 37.4 in. with the handles | No |
| KitchenAid KRMF436, four doors | 28.7 cu. ft. | 35.8 in. | 70.1 in. | 37.4 in. with the handles | No |
| Café four-door | 27.8 cu. ft. | 35.6 in. | 69.9 in. | 36.75 in. | No |
| KitchenAid KRFC236, French door | 24 cu. ft. | 35.6 in. | 69.9 in. | 32.2 in. with the handles | Yes |
| Café French door with hot water | 22.1 cu. ft. | 35.8 in. | 70.5 in. | 31.25 in. | Yes |
| Café 18.6 French door | 18.6 cu. ft. | 32.8 in. | 69.9 in. | 31 in. | Yes |
| Smeg FAB50, two doors | 18.5 cu. ft. | 31.3 in. | 75.6 in. | 31.7 in. without the handle | Not stated by Smeg |
A counter-depth fridge lines up with the front of the counters instead of standing out from them. So the standard-depth fridges hold more, but at about 37 inches deep they stand forward of the counters. And most of these fridges are about 36 inches wide, while the Café 18.6 fits a 33 inch opening and the Smeg FAB50 is 31.3 inches wide, so measure the opening before you choose.
Smeg FAB50: the retro look at family size
Smeg's FAB50 is the only Smeg FAB fridge sized for a family, with two doors and 18.5 cubic feet in all, 14.1 cubic feet in the fridge and 4.4 cubic feet in the freezer. It's frost-free, and its automatic ice maker needs a water line. And the FAB50 is the largest fridge in Smeg's FAB range, which Smeg created in 1997.
The FAB50's doors can't be reversed once the fridge is built, so Smeg sells a left-hinge and a right-hinge version, and Amazon's page lets you pick the hinge. And the warranty is the longest here, with two full years of parts, labor and in-home service from Smeg USA, then parts only for the sealed cooling system through the fifth year.
But repair is the hard part with a Smeg fridge, because a Smeg repair goes through the dealer first, then one outside firm. And one Smeg owner wrote that ten local repair companies refused the job, because they won't work on European closed-system appliances.
The FAB50 comes in six colors, and Amazon carries the white and the pastel blue. But the pastel blue was out of stock when we checked on 6 October 2026, and Smeg sells the other four colors from its own US store.

"The Smeg refrigerator is adorable and I hope to enjoy for many years. It is perfectly quiet and look amazing."

Café: four doors, hot water, or a fridge for a 33 inch opening
Café is a brand of GE Appliances, which is owned by Haier and based in Louisville, Kentucky, and Café makes its fridges in matte white or matte black. And Café sells the handles as separate kits, so the metal on a Café fridge can change later. Each Café fridge has a one-year warranty on the whole appliance, parts and labor, and Abt Electronics sells and delivers it.
Café's four-door fridge is its most-reviewed, at 27.8 cubic feet, with a middle drawer you set anywhere from 23 to 42 degrees and water and ice in the door. It's $4,319 at Abt in late September 2026, in either finish. But the four-door Café is full depth, so it stands forward of the counters, and 6% of its 4,192 owner reviews on Café's site are one star. Those owners describe noise, ice that scatters from the dispenser and an AutoFill that works only some of the time.
"The AutoFill feature is another major disappointment."
A Café owner, review on Café's site, September 2026

The 22.1 cubic foot Café is counter depth, and it has a hot water dispenser in the door, where you set the temperature and the amount. It's $3,869 at Abt in matte black. But 11% of its 1,931 owner reviews on Café's site are one star, and they describe compressor noise and repeat ice maker replacements. So check that Café has service cover where you live before you order it.
"This fridge has always made awful compressor noise and rattles."
A Café owner, review on Café's site, August 2026
The smallest Café, at 18.6 cubic feet, is counter depth and fits a 33 inch opening, with the water dispenser inside the door. It's $2,879 at Abt in matte black, and owners who rate it highly say it's quiet and suits two people. But 10% of its 723 owner reviews on Café's site are one star, and the most detailed one describes food freezing on the top shelf when items block the cold-air inlet at the back.
Both counter-depth Café fridges were on pre-order in matte white at Abt in late September 2026, so the cards show matte black.

KitchenAid Juniper: a dark green fridge in three sizes
KitchenAid's Juniper is a dark green, and KitchenAid sells it beside Black Ore and stainless steel, with handles that match the finish. And KitchenAid makes three French-door fridges in Juniper, all sold by Abt Electronics. Each has a one-year limited warranty on parts and labor, and five years or more on the sealed cooling system.
The KRFC236 is the counter-depth Juniper fridge, at 24 cubic feet, with a full-width drawer you set for wine, deli, drinks or meat, and the water dispenser inside. It's $2,798 at Abt in Juniper. Owners praise the Juniper finish and the drawer, but the critical ones describe door shelves that tilt forward and ice that comes out broken, and one owner had cooling faults in the first 90 days.
"It began having cooling issues within the first 90 days of it being in my home, then the water dispenser pipe cracked and leaked water from underneath the unit, then my ice maker stopped working, and now the cooling isn’t working again."
A KitchenAid KRFC236 owner, Abt review across every finish, August 2026
The KRFF436 is the biggest fridge here, at 30.5 cubic feet, with water and ice in the door and more than 3.5 pounds of ice a day. It's $2,598 at Abt in Juniper. But the KRFF436 is standard depth, 37.4 inches deep with the handles, and several owners describe the left door, which holds the ice maker, swinging closed on its own.

And the KRMF436 has four doors and 28.7 cubic feet, with a full-width drawer between the fridge and the freezer, and ten years of parts on the sealed cooling system. It's $2,898 at Abt, where both finishes were on pre-order in late September 2026. One owner notes that the inside is gray rather than white.

Before you buy a full-size fridge in color
- Depth: decide whether the fridge should line up with the counters, because a standard-depth fridge stands about 37 inches deep, forward of them.
- Width: measure the opening, because most of these fridges are about 36 inches wide, but the Café 18.6 fits a 33 inch opening and the Smeg FAB50 is 31.3 inches wide.
- Water: check for a water line behind the fridge, because the Smeg's ice maker needs a water line, and so does every fridge here with a water dispenser.
- Doors: check the door swing, because the Smeg FAB50's doors can't be reversed, so you order the hinge side your kitchen needs.
- Repairs: ask who repairs the fridge where you live, because one Smeg owner found ten local repair companies that wouldn't take the job.
- Recalls: none of these seven fridges has a recall on record at the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (checked September 2026).
